Literacy Resources My Class

Create a poster instead of writing an essay

As a way of shaking things up and allowing for my visual learners to ‘show’ what they know instead of ‘writing’ what they know, I have students to create a poster instead of writing an essay.

Here are some of the requirements for our Romeo and Juliet study

Their graphic essay (poster) needed to contain

  • 2 quotes from Romeo and Juliet – rewrite and then paraphrase the two quotes
  • 10 examples of literary devices – label the device and give me examples from the play
  • 3 symbols – these symbols should be representative of the themes from the play (love, hate, revenge, family, etc.)
  • Character sketch – identify 2 characters and what they say/do, what others feel about them, how they look and feel and how you feel about them
  • Storyline – identify 10 events from the story
